Here's the biggest news you missed this weekend

President Donald Trump said Saturday that he wasreviewing a new offer from Iranto end the war but offered little optimism that the proposal would succeed.

NBC Universal

“I will soon be reviewing the plan that Iran has just sent to us, but can’t imagine that it would be acceptable in that they have not yet paid a big enough price for what they have done to Humanity, and the World, over the last 47 years,” the president wrote in a Truth Social post.

Iran’s latest proposal would open shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and end the U.S. blockade while pushing off talks on Iran’s nuclear programs for later.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said Sunday that “the room for U.S. decision-making has narrowed.”

As the president weighs how to proceed in the weekslong standoff, he is facing increased pressure from Capitol Hill to seek approval for the conflict. The latest effort to pass a war powers resolution failed in the Senate last week.

More on international conflict and security:

  • European leaders called for the continent to learn how to defend itself after Pentagon officials said the U.S. was withdrawing approximately 5,000 troops from Germany.

  • Two U.S. service members are missing in southwestern Morocco after taking part in annual multinational military exercises in the North African country, the United States Africa Command said.

What Spirit Airlines passengers should know about refunds, rebooking and fares

Within hours of Spirit Airlinesshutting down, thousands of flights had been canceled, leaving travelers stranded. Check-in counters sat empty, customer service lines were unavailable and many passengers said they had received no warning before arriving at the airport.

If you’re holding on to a ticket, the airline said it willautomatically refund those purchaseddirectly with a credit or debit card, while people who booked through third parties must contact their travel agent. One of the most reliable options may be to dispute charges through your credit card company.

Other carriers are also stepping up to absorb the disruption, with United Airlines offering capped “rescue fares” to stranded Spirit passengers for a limited time.

'Meet the Press'

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said Sunday that theindictment of former FBI Director James Comeygoes beyond the Instagram post central to his case.

“This is not just about a single Instagram post,” Blanche told NBC News’ “Meet the Press.” “This is about a body of evidence that [prosecutors] collected over the series of about 11 months. That evidence was presented to the grand jury.”

Blanche said the Justice Department has “evidence of all sorts” against Comey and that the indictment isn’t tied exclusively to the number “86 47,” which appears frequently on social media and online shops.

Appearing later on “Meet the Press,” Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., criticized Blanche’s defense of the indictment, citing the widespread presence of“86 47” merchandiseonline.

“The only facts that distinguish this case from those people buying things on Amazon or posting things on Amazon is not any particular facts that are not visible to public,” the senator said. “It’s the fact that James Comey is a political opponent of the president’s. It’s the fact the president has called upon him for prosecution. It’s the fact that Todd Blanche wants to keep this job.”

Cherie DeVaux became the firstfemale trainer to win the Kentucky Derbywhen Golden Tempo claimed the 152nd Run for the Roses in Saturday’s race at Churchill Downs.

“I’m glad I can be representative of women everywhere,” DeVaux said. “We can do anything we set our minds to.”

Golden Tempo made a late surge to defeat one of the favorites in Renegade, which finished second. DeVaux praised jockey Jose Ortiz — who beat his brother, who was atop Renegade — for his “masterful job.”

“He was so far out of it, and he has had so much faith in this horse,” she said.

And it wouldn’t have been a proper day of horse racing without elaborate outfits and gaudy hats. Check outthe best photos from Churchill Downs.

AI finds signs of pancreatic cancer before tumors develop

The REDMOD AI model analyzes a CT scan to detect early tissue changes associated with pancreatic cancer. (Mayo Clinic)

By the time doctors detect pancreatic cancer, it’s often too late to treat effectively. But a new study suggests that artificial intelligencemight be able to find signs of the diseasebefore tumors are visible on a scan.

An AI model developed at the Mayo Clinic detected abnormalities on patients’ CT scans up to three years before they were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, according to research published this week.

Scientists trained the model by feeding it scans from patients who had been screened for other medical conditions then were later diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Compared to radiologists who reviewed the scans, AI was three times better at identifying the early signs of cancer.

Trump posts AI image of himself, Cabinet members in Reflecting Pool

PresidentDonald Trumpposted an apparently artificially generated image of himself with members of his Cabinet swimming in theLincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.

USA TODAY

The Reflecting Pool has been drained and is undergoingrenovationas part of Trump'sdevelopment projectsaround the nation's capital.

"Right now, it's got no water in it because it was in terrible shape. It was filthy, dirty, and it leaked like a sieve for many years," Trump said in a video message on April 23.

Late on May 1, Trump posted a fake image of himself, shirtless, giving a thumbs up as he lounges in the pool with other Cabinet members in their swimsuits. In October, Trump joked that he wouldn't be seen in abathing suit. Here is what to know about the post and the pool project:

Trump reflecting pool post comes amid restoration projects

Trump has been sprucing up the capital city as a showcase forWorld Cup soccer gamesin June and July and the country’s 250thanniversary on July 4. He is also buildinga $400 million ballroomfor the White House andproposing a triumphal archon an island in the Potomac River.

Trump announced on April 23 that the reflecting pool would also be restored. The Reflecting Pool was built in 1922. Trump described it as an odd shape: 2,200 feet long, 167 feet wide and 1½ to 2 feet deep.

Trump said granite and other stones used to construct it weren’t the best for holding water, like the hundreds of swimming pools he built as a real estate developer.

The president added that he inspected the pool after hearing from a friend visiting from Germany who called the appearance “sad.”

“He said it’s filthy, dirty, the water is disgusting looking,” Trump said. “It’s not representative of the country.”

Trump said the Biden administration had studied replacing the iconic pool’s granite but never embarked on the project, which had an estimated cost of $301 million and was expected to take more than three years. Instead, Trump said, contractors would sandblast, caulk and resurface the bottom like an industrial-grade pool for an estimated $1.5 million and be finished in a few weeks. The bottom will be repainted "American flag blue."

Who else is pictured in the reflecting pool swim party post?

Trump is pictured in a golden inflatable chair with other members of his Cabinet in the AI image posted May 1. Swimming next to him is Vice PresidentJD Vance, Secretary of StateMarco Rubio, Secretary of the InteriorDoug Burgumand a woman in a bikini. The White House did not immediately confirm her identity.

The same night, Trump also posted a picture of himself with a handful of Uno wildcards, captioned"I have all the cards."The president has taken to frequently posting fake illustrations of himself, including one of him beingembraced by Jesus.

US Attorney Pirro says agent 'definitely' shot by DC press dinner shooting suspect

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said that the bullet that struck a Secret Service agent in the shooting at theWhite House Correspondents' Association dinnerwas "definitely" from suspect Cole Tomas Allen's gun.

USA TODAY

“We now can establish that a pellet that came from the buckshot, from the defendant’s Mossberg pump action shotgun, was intertwined with the fiber of the vest of the Secret Service officer,” Pirro said inan interview with CNN's Jake Tapperon May 3 on "State of the Union."

USA TODAY previously reportedthat evidence collected so far indicates the only Secret Service agent who actually fired their weapon at Allen was the one who was injured as he tried to prevent what prosecutors allege was an attempted assassination onPresident Donald Trump. The agent, who has not been identified, fired five times but did not hit the suspect.

Initial court filingsdid not specifically allege that Allen shot the agent, though Trump and administration officials haveclaimed that he did in public comments.

"That is interesting and noteworthy because what it shows is the government does not yet have conclusive proof that the suspect did shoot the agent," Mark Lesko, a former U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, told the BBC on May 1.

U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro speaks during a press conference about the shooting that happened at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner where U.S. President Donald Trump was present, at the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., on April 27, 2026.

Sean Curran, director of the Secret Service, said all the evidence indicates the agent was shot at "point-blank range" with a shotgun by the suspect in an April 30 interview on "The Will Cain Show" on Fox News.

Allen currently facesassassination and firearm charges, though Pirro said in the "State of the Union" interview that the Department of Justice will go before a grand jury on May 8, where further charges could be filed.

"Suicide prevention" protocols prevent an inmate from visiting or contacting anyone that is not a part of their legal team and only allow for an inmate to leave their cell for legal visits and escorted showers, according to the filing.

"These conditions are excessive restrictions on his liberty that serve no justifiable purpose and depriveMr. Allen of dignity while incarcerated," the motion reads. Allen's lawyers further argued that the conditions hinder him from participating in his defense.

A hearing on Allen's holding conditions is scheduled on the court docket for 12 p.m. ET on May 4. USA TODAY has reached out to Allen's lawyers for further comment.
